From Shame to Selfhood: A Shirt, a Shift, a Story

A T-Shirt That Brought Everything Back

I never thought a GAP T-shirt would take me down memory lane.

Today, as I slip on a new GAP t-shirt, I’m metamorphically transported through time, back to the girl who stood in that store years ago, clutching a gift card she had worked so hard to earn.

The Voice That Lingered

I can still hear my mother’s voice echoing in my mind.

“Don’t ever win anything from GAP again.”

I had won a gift certificate but couldn’t find a single thing that fit.

It gave her anxiety, and it left me feeling like I was the problem.

Nothing Fit—Not the Clothes, Not Me

I walked out defeated, with only a scarf and a rubber duckie for my oldest niece.

Religion played a part too— no shirts with words, nothing too bold, nothing that felt like me — it seemed impossible to find anything I was allowed to wear.

Between that and the sizing, I just didn't belong.

Reclaiming What Was Once Off-Limits

But today I claim my past, and I choose.

Now, whenever I see something that says GAP, I grab it without hesitation.

This one is from the men’s section — and I hold it close to my heart.

Breaking Free from Expectations

Mommy, you were wrong.

Clothes don’t have genders.

And I’m no longer trying to shrink myself to fit anyone’s expectations.

I’m evolving every day.

Learning to love myself more deeply.

And living more authentically with each step. ❤️

The Work That Grew From This

This journey has led me somewhere I never expected—Toward helping others rewrite their own stories.

I’ve begun writing a memoir that doubles as a handbook for those who need help navigating the secular world after leaving any religion.

Today I support others, especially those with special needs, as they find their own path to healing and acceptance.

A New Chapter Begins

I’m embarking on a beautiful new chapter in life — one I’ve waited my whole life to begin. ✨

And this time, the shirt fits just right.

Until next time,

Shane
